Historic Village Highlights, 1982-Present 

 

1982
Commuter Railroad Station is opened at the south terminus of
Springinsguth Road.

1983
Sister city relationship established with
Schaumburg, Germany.

1985
Northwest Tollway interchange at Roselle Road is opened.

1986
Village annexes the 480 acres Odlum Farm property on the west side of the village.

Schaumburg Prairie Center for the Arts is completed.

1987
Al Larson is elected Village President.

1989
Zurich American Insurance completes its second office tower.

1990
Schaumburg Municipal Helistop is opened.
Village population increases to 68,685 residents as the village limits expand to include 18.8 square miles.

 

 

1993
The 620,000 square foot Woodfield Village Green shopping center opens its doors.
Elgin-O'Hare Expressway opens.
Expansion of Woodfield Mall begins, adding approximately 500,000 square feet of commercial space to accommodate Nordstrom store and other retail stores.

1995
Village renovates and reopens
Schaumburg Regional Airport.
Village purchases land in
Town Square.
IKEA, a 400,000 square foot furniture store is approved.
Road improvements begin for the Triangle Area - Golf,
Roselle, and Higgins Road.

1996
Schaumburg celebrates its 40th anniversary with a population of 73,745.

1997
Chicago Athenaeum announces plans for a campus museum.
Construction of the Streets of Woodfield begins at former
One Schaumburg Place.

1998
Schaumburg Road Community Corridor and Roadway Enhancement Projects begin.
Schaumburg Township Library relocates to
Town Square.
Village announces it will build a baseball stadium (Alexian Field) with the Park District near the Schaumburg Commuter Rail Station.

2000
Village purchases 45 acres for future convention center site to be opened in 2005.

Construction of Windy Point and Woodfield Preserve office buildings.

Woodfield Trolley service is offered in Woodfield Regional Center.

2006
Village celebrates 50th anniversary of incorporation.
Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel and Convention Center celebrates grand opening.

2010
Economic growth continues with opening of Whole Foods Market and Crate and Barrel across from Woodfield Mall
