Historic Village Highlights, 1835-1981 

 
The Village of Schaumburg was incorporated on March 7, 1956, but the heritage of Schaumburg dates back to the much earlier times when the first inhabitants of the area were members of the Sauk, Fox, Pottawatomie, and Kickapoo Indian tribes. By the mid-nineteenth century, settlers first began to arrive from Germany and the eastern United States. Listed below are some historic highlights of the village.
 

1835
Trumball
Kent of Oswego, NY becomes the first settler in Schaumburg.

1847
St. Peter Lutheran Church is founded.

1848
First Post Office is opened.

1850
Name of community is changed from Sarah's Grove to
Schaumburg in honor of Schaumburg-Lippe, Germany.
Galena and Chicago Union Railroad (Milwaukee Road) is constructed between Chicago and Elgin.

1851
St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church is built.

1858
Schaumburg Centre, through the efforts of Heinrich Schierding, was laid out in building sites.

1873
First cheese factory is opened.

1886
Schaumburg Centre consists of a school, two stores, a church, a wagon shop, a blacksmith shop, and 12 residences.

1890
Fire Department is organized.

1908
First bank is opened.

1920
Higgins Road
and Roselle Road become the first paved roads in the community.

1954

Northwest Tollway (Interstate 90) is proposed.

1956
Village becomes incorporated on
March 7, 1956. It consists of two square miles and a population of 130 residents.
Louis Redeker is elected first Village President.

1959
Alfred Campanelli begins construction of Weathersfield, Unit 1, the first residential subdivision in the community.
Robert Atcher is elected Village President.

1960
Martin Conroy becomes the first village employee.

1964
Schaumburg Air Park is annexed.

1967
Pritzker Family and Centex Corporation acquire 587 acres of land in what is now called
Spectrum Industrial Park.

1970
Village population is 18,730.
Schaumburg High School is opened.

1971
Village holds the first annual Septemberfest celebration.
Woodfield Mall opens.

1974
Schaumburg Municipal Center is completed.

1975
Raymond Kessell is elected Village President.
John Coste becomes first Village Manager.

1976
Village celebrates 20th Anniversary with population of 43,580.
Schaumburg Public Safety Building is completed.

1977
Olde Schaumburg Centre Historic District is created for the area contiguous to the intersection of
Schaumburg Road and Roselle Road.

1979
Herbert J. Agner is appointed Village President after Ray Kessell, who was reelected in 1979, retires, and moves from
Schaumburg as the result of a job transfer.

1980
Village consists of 18.3 square miles in area and population of 53,305.
Comprehensive Bikeways Program is begun.

1981
Schaumburg Park District Recreation Center opens.
