Permits Counter

The Village of Schaumburg has been closely monitoring reports and recommendations from local, state, and national health agencies regarding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).  With this in mind, we would like to encourage both our residential and commercial customers to utilize any of these alternate ways to obtain permits and contractor’s licenses:

  • Express Permits and contractor’s licenses via WebPay – Submit and pay for the following permits without leaving your home or office!
    • Roofing, Siding, Air Conditioner, Furnace, Water Heater, Certificate of Occupancy
    • Note:Payments must be made by credit card with a 2.25% service fee
    • Your permit card will be approved and emailed to you. Please print (preferably in color) and post in a prominent location near the entry prior to starting work.
  • Residential or Commercial Permits and Plans – submit your permit application and plans by emailing to planreview@schaumburg.com. Ideally, emailed plans should be 10MB or less.
  • Large Residential or Commercial Permits and Plans – Submittals with plans larger than 10MB can be submitted on a CD and be mailed to us at 101 Schaumburg Ct, Schaumburg, IL 60193, Attn: Permits. As an alternative, the applicant may also send an electronic link to planrview@schaumburg.com so that we may download drawings from your cloud-based storage (ie: Dropbox, Google Drive, One Drive, etc.).
  • Please refer to our electronic submittal resource guide for additional information.
  • Permit payments can be made on our WebPay page once plans are approved. We will provide you with a fee and a code to access our Pay for a Permit WebPay page.
  • Your approved plans can be emailed to you if within the size restrictions. Otherwise, approved plans can be mailed on a CD.

Express permits do not require a plan review and can be issued over the counter with submittal of the village Residential Express Permit Application. If a contractor is performing the work,the contractor(s) must have a valid Contractor's Business License. Inspections are conducted depending on the scope of work.Inspections can be scheduled up to 4pm the business day prior to the requested inspection date.

Air Conditioner - Residential (Current Fee $20)

A Residential Express Permit Application is required for installation of an air-conditioning unit. Installation is per manufacturer's specifications and a final inspection must be scheduled upon completion.

CONVENIENT WebPay OPTION! Permits for Residential Air Conditioner installations can be applied for online! Visit the WebPay area under the Apply heading, then click on  Furnace and/or Air Conditioner Permit Residential.  Follow the instructions to upload your completed Express Permit Application and submit your payment. You will be contacted when your permit has been approved, and your permit card will be sent to you via email. Enjoy the convenience of applying for permits from your own home or office!


Electrical Miscellaneous (Current Fee - Residential$10; Commercial $103)

A Residential Express Permit Application is required for various miscellaneous electrical work that may be performed in your residence or business. Some examples pertaining to residential properties include new wiring or circuits for kitchen appliances, adding circuits or new lighting loads. Some examples pertaining to commercial properties include adding circuits to an existing system, additional light fixtures, or changing amperage devices.A final inspection must be scheduled upon completion.Contact the Permitting Division of the Community Development Department at 847.923.4420 to determine if your project may require a permit.


Furnace (Current Fee - Residential $15; Commercial $103)

Residential Express Permit Application

is required for installation of a furnace. Installation is per manufacturer’s specifications and a final inspection must be scheduled upon completion.

Visit the WebPay area under the Apply heading, then click on  Furnace and/or Air Conditioner Permit Residential.  Follow the instructions to upload your completed Express Permit Application and submit your payment. You will be contacted when your permit has been approved, and your permit card will be sent to you via email. Enjoy the convenience of applying for permits from your own home or office!

Commercial permits must be applied for in person with a detailed proposal of the installation including a site map. A plan review is required.


New Tenant Occupancy (Current Fee Based on Square Footage Listed Below)

Certificate of Occupancy permit application is required for residential and commercial new tenant occupancies when you are not performing any type of alteration work. The fee is based on square footage as noted below. Once you have applied for the occupancy,  inspections can be performed as early as the next business day if they are scheduled by 4pm. A Certificate of Occupancy will be issued when all inspections have been approved. After receipt of your occupancy, all businesses must apply for a business license in the Collections Division of the Finance Department.

  • Less than 10,000 square feet - $205
  • 10,000-49,999 square feet- $377
  • 50,000 plus square feet - $727
  • Additional fee if Health inspection is required - $88 added to the above amounts.

NEW! Permits for Certificates of Occupancy can be applied for online! Visit the WebPay area under the Apply heading, then click on  Certificate of Occupancy Permit.  Follow the instructions to upload your completed Certificate of Occupancy Application, and submit your payment. You will be contacted when your submittal has been approved and your inspections scheduled Enjoy the convenience of applying for permits from your office!


Plumbing - Miscellaneous (Current Fee $35 plus $12 per fixture)

A Residential Express Permit Application is required for various miscellaneous plumbing work that may be performed in your residence or business. Some examples include miscellaneous repairs and code violations, conversion of tub to whirlpool, installation of overhead sewer, etc. A final inspection must be scheduled upon completion. Effective March 1, 2013, per 225 ILCS 320/37 (from Ch. 111, par. 1135 of The Illinois Plumbing License Law),"A letter of intent shall be included with all plumbing permit applications. The letter shall be written on the licensed plumber of record's business stationery and shall include the license holder's signature and, if the license holder is incorporated, the license holder's corporate seal. If the license holder is not incorporated, the letter must be notarized."Contact the Permitting Division of the Community Development Department at 847.923.4420 to determine if your project may require a permit.


Re-Roof Residential (Current Fee $50)

A Residential Express Permit Application is required for roofing systems. If the work is being performed by a roofing contractor, the contractor must provide us with a copy of his State Roofer's License. We will ask the applicant to furnish a copy of a state identification card which will be maintained with the roofing permit. You can verify if the contractor you have selected has a State Roofer's License by visiting the Illinois State Department of Professional Regulations. Once work commences, an active inspection must be scheduled and a final inspection must be scheduled upon completion.Further pertinent code requirements can be viewed in our Resource Guide. Sewer Repair (Current Fee - Residential$40; Commercial $113)

A Residential Express Permit Application is required for sewer repairs.If the work is being performed by a plumbing contractor, the contractor must provide us with a copy of his State Plumber's License. You can verify if the contractor you have selected has a State Plumber's License by contacting the State of Illinois Department of Public Health at 217.524.0791.Effective March 1, 2013, per 225 ILCS 320/37 (from Ch. 111, par. 1135 of The Illinois Plumbing License Law), "A letter of intent shall be included with all plumbing permit applications. The letter shall be written on the licensed plumber of record's business stationery and shall include the license holder's signatureand, if the license holder is incorporated, the license holder's corporate seal. If the license holder is not incorporated, the letter must be notarized." A final inspection must be scheduled upon completion of the work.


Siding (Current Fee $50)

A Residential Express Permit Application is required for installation of siding and soffit/gutter work. If the scope of work is only for replacement gutters, a permit is not required. An active inspection is required during the installation to verify that the weather resistant barrier is installed correctly and that the siding is installed per the manufacturer's guidelines. Temporary Storage Units -- No Permit Required

In residential areas, units are to be located on a paved surface, such as a concrete or asphalt driveway or parking lot. The maximum size of a storage unit is 16 x 8 feet. Storage units cannot infringe upon the sidewalk, street or other property. The number of storage units on a property is determined by the size of the driveway or parking lot on which they are to be placed. If the storage unit(s) are to be located in the common area of a multifamily property, be sure to obtain written permission from the property owner or homeowner's association to install temporary storage units. Temporary storage units are limited to a period of 45 days. A permit is no longer required, but be sure to follow these regulations.


Water Heater (Current Fee - Residential$10)

A Residential Express Permit Application is required for installation of water heaters. If the work is being performed by a plumbing contractor, the contractor must provide us with a copy of his State Plumber's License.
