What is a Beat?
The Village of Schaumburg is divided into
10 patrol beats
. In 1996, as part of the transition to community policing, permanent beat and shift assignments were created. All officers select a shift and beat for the entire calendar year. Also developed was the beat team concept. Each of the patrol field sergeants (one per beat) is responsible for an entire beat as the beat coordinator. The rest of the team includes three patrol officers and three relief officers.
What is a Beat Meeting?
Beat teams meet on a monthly basis to identify and discuss new or ongoing problems and resolutions within the beat area. Beat teams have been developed to enhance police department problem solving efforts by directly working on problems in the community.
Since the mid-1990's, the Schaumburg Police department has welcomed community policing, a progressive law enforcement model where police and the community members work together to identify and solve problems.
In Schaumburg, the heart of community policing rests in each of 10 geographic beats that cover the entire village. Each beat is covered by a permanent beat team that includes patrol officers, detectives, tactical officers, and a sergeant who serve as the beat coordinator.
If you have a concern to be discussed at the beat meeting, please contact the Police Department at 847.882.3534, or 311 within Schaumburg to ensure your topic is placed on the agenda.
