Dear Friends:

Without volunteers, Schaumburg’s Village government could not function. The Zoning Board, the Plan Commission, Schaumburg’s Board of Health are all comprised of volunteers. Volunteers organize and operate Septemberfest. Volunteers serve as members of the Village’s Cultural Commission, Bikeways Committee, and Olde Schaumburg Centre Commission. Volunteers hire Schaumburg’s police officers and fire fighters through the Police and Fire Commission.

Please volunteer some time on behalf of volunteers and nominate an adult for Volunteer of the Year, a Junior High through High School age Youth of the Year and/or a worthy organization for Volunteer Organization of the Year. We need to hear about the good that some people are doing and about the fine work that volunteer organizations are involved in. Your help will help us give these folks the recognition they deserve. Please feel free to forward the nomination materials to a colleague if an organization or individual does not immediately come to mind and/or share the information about this wonderful awards opportunity at any of your group’s upcoming events.

Sincerely,
Al Larson
Schaumburg Village President

Erin Merryn is author of Stolen Innocence and Living for Today; both are memoirs about incest and rape. Erin earned her Master’s degree in social work from Aurora University in May 2009. In 2004, during her senior year of high school, Erin began a crusade to end the silence and shame around sexual abuse. She puts a bright light and outspoken voice on the silent epidemic traveling the country; she gives inspirational and motivational speeches to thousands. Erin has made numerous media appearances including Katie Couric, Oprah, CNN, Good Morning America, Montel Williams, and Jane Velez Mitchell, among others. She has appeared in Time Magazine, London Times, Glamour Magazine, and the Chicago Tribune, among others. She was named GLAMOUR magazine woman of the year for 2012. Erin was the driving force behind Erin's Law. Passed in January, 2013, Erin's Law requires sexual abuse awareness programs in Illinois' schools. Erin’s mission is to shatter the silence and stigma around sexual abuse and to educate and empower children to speak up about abuse. She will continue working nationwide to see that similar legislation is passed in all 50 states.
